STATE OF MICHIGAN
The Hospital Industry Report, published by the Michigan Health Purchasers Coalition (MIHPC), provides an in-depth look at hospital quality, patient safety, financial performance, commercial pricing, and overall value across hospitals in the State of Michigan.
Using nationally recognized data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), The Leapfrog Group, RAND Corporation, the National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP), and other publicly available sources, the report examines an important question: Are employers, workers, and families receiving high-quality hospital care at a price that reflects the value being delivered?
The findings reveal significant variation in hospital performance across the state. Most hospitals lag national benchmarks on overall quality, while several patient safety measures point to opportunities for improvement. At the same time, hospitals throughout the state remain financially strong, and commercial health plans frequently pay prices substantially above Medicare reimbursement rates and hospital-specific break-even levels.
The report also looks beyond price alone by comparing hospital costs with quality. The analysis finds that higher hospital prices do not consistently translate into higher-quality care, underscoring the importance of evaluating both price and performance when assessing hospital value.
For employers, healthcare purchasers, policymakers, and patients, the report provides data that can support more informed healthcare purchasing decisions, greater transparency, and strategies that reward hospitals for delivering high-quality care at a reasonable price.
The Hospital Industry Report is broken down by REGION and individual HOSPITAL RATE CARDS.
