Hospital Services & Drugs Price Comparisons

In Michigan, hospital costs are climbing at an unsustainable rate. They account for almost half of employer healthcare costs, including out-of-pocket expenses, and are the most significant and fastest-growing sector of the National Healthcare Expenditure. The cost of hospital services varies widely for the same service in the same geographic area and even within the same hospital systems.

These escalating costs are a significant burden on employers. As plan fiduciaries, employers have a duty to ensure they are paying fair prices for the services they and their employees receive, especially given the high costs associated with these services. There has therefore been a push for hospital price transparency initiatives as a response to the increasing financial strain on employers and aims to shed light on the reasons behind the steep rise in hospital prices.

The Michigan Health Purchasers Coalition (MIHPC) launched the Price Transparency in Hospital Services, Drugs, and Procedures Series to highlight the significant disparities in healthcare costs across different geographic locations and hospital systems. This initiative seeks to shed light on the issue of price transparency in hospital services and emphasize the potential for substantial savings through informed decision-making. Additionally, it will explore the implications for employers, employees, and the broader healthcare system. Our goal is to help inform and support employers using this data to make thoughtful decision-making around health and hospital care for their employees, potentially leading to reduced health plan expenses and improved benefits.
